Helen attended the
Maritime Law Short Course at Southampton
University in 2000. Thereafter she furthered
her studies and gained a BSc(Hons) Degree
in Shipping and Transport Management from
Guildhall University in 2002. Her final
year project was on the SCOPIC 2000 Clause.
In 2003 Helen obtained
an LLM (with merit) in Maritime and Commercial
Law from the University in Wales, Swansea.
In focusing her attention on the transport
of dangerous cargo, her dissertation was
on the topic of The Hazardous and Noxious
Substances (HNS) Convention 1996.
Helen heads up our
Legal and Ship Registration Division. However
she has also attended numerous casualties
ranging from routine cargo damages such
as Palm Oil, Frozen Meat, Oranges, Paper
Reels, to more complicated incidents of
dealing with damaged trucks and cargo from
a burnt ferry. She has also assisted in
inspections of a burnt engine room, as well
as preparing SCOPIC calculations concerning
a stranded cargo ship and dealing with distressed
passengers from a stricken ferry.
Helen organises our
3 day ShipShape Training Course, which is
offered to young Insurance or Legal personnel
as an introduction to the practical aspects
of shipping. This biannual course includes
visits to ships under repair and working
cargo and seminars by experienced Masters,
Marine Engineers and Naval Architects.
Helen has progressed
several major claims including the fire
on ferry KNOSSOS PALACE and analysis of
the expenses arising out of the fire and
explosion on container vessel SEALAND MARINER.
